Hey fish. I replaced mine 3 weeks ago. My whole unit was shot.
I had my system de-gassed. I then replaced the compressor my self and then got it re-gassed again after.
The compressor itself is very easy. Bolt off, bolt on. Basic nuts and bolts.
I attacked it from underneath as well as from the side. Wheel off, and then the rubber wall (if thats what you call it) off.
I replaced mine with a Jayair/Valeo branded unit.
Most consuming time spent by me was with the belts.
I had a c*** of a time with the belts. Especially putting on the aircon one. But maybe it was the way I was doing it...

Not at all hodge, AC belt and having doing the others at same time is a pain!

I think mine's shot, too. Is yours a genuine Nissan air con compressor? How much?
Mine makes a horrible noise when I turn the fan on.

I initially thought it was the bearing under the main pulley that was shot. This was a replacable bearing, albeit a major PITA to do.
Mine was noisy without AC/Clutch being kicked in. But when i engage AC, it goes super loud.
This means the internals of the compressor could be shot as the load is transferred off the pulley bearing onto the internal bearing.
I've taken my old compressor apart and the internals were shot and slightly rusty, very noisy by simply turning with hand. Mine would have seized up within weeks if i didnt act on it.

Normally I take it to my mechanic and say 'fix it', but I recently found out, through unfortunate experience, my local dealership doesn't have a qualified auto leckie, so It'll be going to the local auto leckie in the new year - sooner rather than later. Forecast 40 on Xmas day. lol.

Hahaha. Sorry mate. Let me re-do it more simpler in order of sequence.
1. Went through several water crossings.
2. After that a whiney noise began appearing , especially when motor is revved up a bit...
3. Pin-pointed the noise to Aircon compressor.
4. Assumed it was the common bearing shot, which sits under the Aircon pulley (the bit that belt wraps and goes around(simple enough?)).
5. Found out, that this noise goes 50x louder when Aircon gets actually turned on.
6. After some homework and a visit to 2 aircon specialists, it was determined that the whole Aircon Compressor was stuffed, and not just the pulley attached to it.
7. After I replaced my Aircon compressor, I pulled my old one apart and it was clear as day, the internals were rusted/shot, especially the bearing that sits around the internal shaft.
Hope that clears it up a little bit more mate.
