View Full Version : Almost a Patrol owner (again)

I've had a G60 with a 308, an MQ with a diesel and a GQ with a TB42. I tend to either own a motorbike or a 4x4, rarely both at the same time. So on 28th December, someone took it upon themselves to take ownership of my Kawasaki Z1000 (without my permission). So now I'm back in the 4x4 game.
Decided that I'd buy a GU. Looking at a couple for around $10k, 99-00-01 year, 2.8 or 3.0 diesel. I know of the notoriety of the 3.0's, but I suspect there's a bit of confirmation bias in there. Everyone who has a failed 3.0 lets everyone know. Everyone who has a failed 4.2 or any other motor cries in their beer for a bit, pays for repairs and moves on. Not saying I don't believe the hype, but I just don't think the problems are as bad as some (most often not even Patrol owners) seem to advertise.
Can't wait to make a decision, and head bush! I've even managed to get the wife excited about owning a 4x4 this time around (never convinced her in the past)

Hey mate,
I had 2004 gu. Last of the series III. Installed the NADS and loved it. From everything I have read the early 2000 to 2002 were more seceptible to going kaput due to not enough oil getting to the back piston. The dipstick was shortened as it was not holding enough oil. I think they changed a couple of other things in the 2003 model. Mine had about 250k's on it, no smoke and no issues.
Stupidly sold it to lease a car through work but left my job so had to sell the new car and just picked up this week a 4.2 Maverick.

Your spot on..
I know heaps of people who have early model gu's and are happy..
And tow big loads..
One good thing is zd30 ' s are so cheap lol.. people throwing them out. So a rebuild can be pretty cheap..
Anyway enjoy the hunt. There are some good bargins to be had atm

Pulled the trigger on a 2000 GU 3.0 with a few goodies - 4" lift, 33's, roof rack, and some other bits. Changed the radius arm bushes today in preparation for a RWC.

It's not legal, unless it's been engineered.

Ahh, right. It's closer to 3" than 4, and I'm toying with the idea of dropping it down to 2" anyway, so not particularly bothered either way TBH.
