Hello to all those lucky enough to drive GQ's (remember a GQ is god's preferred 4x4) ...

Ok down to business, I have a 1990 GQ RB30 with extractors, carby etc 2 inch lift, running 31x10.5 R15's

Now the engine what are the do's and don'ts re operating this engine. I average about 18k's per litres, are there any faults (other than being a bit under powered (my opinion only)). Are they ok with revving? Can you drive them hard ish? If so what are the limits per sei?

On another note ... The engine is very very hard to start in cold mornings, how can I over come this, what do I need to change, service or modify.

I believe there might be some links or threads out there but for the life of me I am unable to find them ... Hey! SMS is new to me

So any comments, advice etc would be most welcome.

Ta in anticipation

I have an rb30 and am trying to get it roadworthy . Only had it 3 weeks and body is now really good - better looked after than most gq's. bargain but then again you have to take into account it's petrol and only 3 l I suppose. My thoughts tho is that it should go most places. Like you I want 2" lift. Am running 30's at the moment and maybe thinking 33 when tyres go too hard but worried about offset and guard clearance etc. Think 33 may stick out of the arches and trying to source good wheel arch exts is going no where. Maybe an rb30 appreciation section in the forum would be good ? It's a challenge if nothing else! Good luck with the rb

I have found that the second stage of the carby can gum up, so its a good idea to flog the engine occasionally, to ensure everything is kept working. I give the little donk a hiding on the sand dunes and it loves to rev.

The only noise I get from under the hood is me cursing that I still can't fix the intermittent wipers! Motor is quiet tho

As for the hard starting, is the auto choke working?

No. It's just a bugger to start when very cold

It may only need an adjustment. The Choke Break diaphragm on my auto choke had a split in it. I got sick of the auto choke playing up, and fitted a manual cable. Only use it on really cold mornings though.
