hey, well I was out wheeling on the weekend and was giving the truck a bit off a boot full came up to a bit of a ramp and launched it, what the scary thing was when I came down back to the earth :p the seatbelt tore completely at the stitching on the lowest point there was not a heap of force on it scared the crap out of me that it actually happened. I was just wondering has any one else come across this issue

seat belts on GU's are a Shite of a thing they don't retract etc,
if you have a search you'll find an after market mob that make seatbelts that retract and suit the GU.
Price is about $350 a pair, based in NSW I think

Like everything these have a life span to.
You've reached yours.. I'd be doing all of em to be sure. Last thing you want its to find a failure in a crash..

I have noticed gu belts are thinner and more comfortable. Dunno if the fit or not??

yes I will def be replacing them all with new ones just a bit concerning that there isn't a date when automotive seat belts should be replaced, though in plant machinery I clearly states when they should be changed

interesting point maybe someone will know if they have a "used by date"

I'm surprised it ripped though, are sure there wasn't any pre wear rips or has it actually ripped the belt or has it purely pulled away from the stitching?

When I changed my two front seats in the gq 50% of the bolts were already loose.

Bit scary...

When I purchased my GQ the belts were buggered and if you live somewhere where there is a Bursons you can buy brand new generic belts-in black- for around $70 each depending on who you know. they work really well and retract at a great rate.
There is no use by date for seat belts however there is a tag which comes out near the bottom when the belt has been used in a full on restraint situation. As the tag is visible it makes them un roadworthy [in Vic]
You may be interested to know that the harnesses on aircraft -for pilots have No use by date and are not renewed during refits--at least not at Avalon

Ryan,

I haven't seen a Patrol belt split ever, and no one out of all the guys I go out with, have mentioned it either....

Could the belt have been wet as some stage, stitching can rot if exposed to moisture and not dried out properly, it may look fine , but could be very weak.

Good point 04off I think it's the only thing I can put it down to. the there was a lot of rust in the the floor I had to cut out and weld new sectoions in not far from the seat belt points and the carpet was always wet in that area

From what Ive found there is no "use by date" for seat belts, its just a visual inspection.
Any frayed belt needs replacing, Its a safety item and could save your life or the life of someone in your Patrol
I'll find the link for you, check out this mob

I would think so,, no point redesigning them
seeing they could carry them over for a few models

I put new GU seatbelts in the front the other day. You may need to reuse the original bolts. I did as the bolts vary between GU series. (I purchased them on price, not fit :D)

I was having troubles with retracting, even after cleaning gunk off. The new belts are silky smooth.

$165 each for genuine driver and passenger retracting belts.

So the belt webbing hasn't torn. If you pull the stitching with tweezers, does it break?

Did you get them through patrolapart or just through a dealer?
Are utes and wagons the same? my retractors are getting a bit weak these days

I bought through nizzbits. The best way is to provide the vin for the first purchase. After that, Garry just looks it up again when you say "need xyz parts" and sends the right one. If you are swapping parts from another model, then discuss that then.
Retracting belts for driver/passenger are the same between wagon and Ute. (And the Ute with bench seat is different in that the female receiver has a flexible strap that bolts to the floor, instead of being bolted to the seat like the drivers'.

Also there is an earlier belt from Japan, and a later belt. Unsure on the year it changed. I bought the later belt, as it was cheaper. Needed to use the swap back in the original bolts to hold the top mount. The old bolts are shorter.

Also I used side cutters to trim a small amount of plastic, so the cover (removed for photo) would fit.

If the ratchet sticks in the locked position (I hit the belt panel when it does), is this a fore-bearer to a major seat belt problem?

As love ke70 above says great post. I had never really thought about how old and ineffective my seat belts may be after 23 years. Definitely now on the must do list of improvements

Didn't say. I inquired about the belt for my ute only to be told the wagon is different. Let us know what you find if anything different.
