Stock patrol offset is usually -13 on 7" rims.
Are you looking to buy or do you have them? If you have them its quite simple to meassure.

Definitely not -13, they're a 16x8 as Threedogs said.

I have heard both +10 and 0. Not sure what is right and I have not measured mine.

16 x 8 will be perfect for your GQ with 285s
Those rims I powder coated charcoal metallic grey with a clear coat
they are fitted to my trailer/camper

td42shayne
26th February 2014, 09:29 AM

threedogs
26th February 2014, 09:40 AM
no they run 265s as they are on a Hilux tub camper, 285s would not fit

MudRunnerTD
26th February 2014, 09:45 AM
255 85 is a very unusual size?? where in the World are you mate? 265 is factory on teh GUs and 285 (33s) are the most common upgrade in Australia i reckon and many many guys will tour on a 285.

td42shayne
26th February 2014, 10:15 AM
im in sa ive been looking around at 255 and heard all good things.i actually found one in my junk pile the other day. bfg old mud ,taller and a bit thinner than my cooper st 285.from what I can gather performance wise their as good as 285, better steering, not many brands make em though ,so far found bfgkm2,maxxis 762,cooper st and I think toyo have just released open country mt lt 255 85 r16 123p/10pr 1816-0145 360460 one nice looking tyre not in Australia with nomal tyre joints. people who have 255 seem to swear by them and I think they look spot on . how they look is the main thing haha

Winnie
26th February 2014, 10:54 AM
I would skip on the 255s and go with 265/75R16s. Much more common size and probably cheaper?

td42shayne
26th February 2014, 11:19 AM
I agree mate...unless we all start buying 255 and make them common haha

threedogs
26th February 2014, 01:32 PM
I don't think fitting smaller tyres than STD would help your cause .
285 is about a 33 and 11.5 inches wide this will give you extra ground clearance
fitting a 255 would be going backwards, IMO where are you from again
Sth Africa or Sth Aust

What are you fitting the 255 to what vehicle ??

td42shayne
26th February 2014, 04:10 PM
255 is a true 33 some nearly 34 and 10 to 10 and a half wide and im from south Australia.they are taller than 285.theres a good write up on google. toyo mt 255/85r16 expeditionportal.com .I think its the first one on the google search page shows good pictures.im not good with computer. its a gq patrol 2 inch spring lift probably 1inch these days that there going on.

I just had a look and the 255/85 is ever so slightly bigger than a 33. Why not just go with 285 really? So much more common. And look heaps better!

at this point of time your argument is more logical and correct but I like the idea of as close to neg offset as possible,i believe they would behave better in the front gaurds ,I think they would steer lighter, maybee bite better on gravel mud ext ,maybe better fuel economy,$10 dearer each isn't to bad ,slightly skinnier spare especialy if you had two stacked together, and I love the look of low car tall thin tyre .so theres only one way to find out about the maybees.

Learn something new every day, If travelling outback you'll have a better chance of finding a 285 rather than a 255.
nice and skinny not too good on the road I'd think

Hi shayne,

The only real problem with going a random size to be honest is if you intend to go touring this great country. If your touring with a group Everyone else will be on a 285. If you wreck 2 tyres your on your own. Trying to find a replacement tyre in your size in the outback will be impossible. And Very expensive.

Half the country is touring on 285s the rest are touring on. 265s if you never leave town don't worry about it, it'll you intend to your then I would caution against your descision.

Learn something new everyday. Still to measure mine though.

Um I'm with the rest of the guys.
A 265 (10.5“) is a lot more common in the 33" range. If you dig hard suppliers will usually discount a bit due to its popularity to get a sale..

But I tend to disagree that you'll be on your own. As long as the rolling diameter of the tyres are the same you can bolt on any width Tyre as a spare. It'll look odd but will get you home..

should be a chart with STD rims/mags and all offsets for both GQ/GU then what ppl change up to.
these Questions pop up all the time

just bought 5 ti rims with 4 half decent tread, kumho road venture,265 75.he let me have for $150 for the lot. im missing 4 mag nuts that seem pretty hard to get hold of..i am shocked how siow the car feels taking off and at 110 km Im not used of the extra revs . I thought it wold have took off like a rocket but the 285 75 must have been perfect gearing, mind you it only weighs in at about 2300 kg so 265 75 must be good when towing. I like how quiet the road tyres feel compared to my very old cooper st.. they seem to sit good in the gaurds.mabee thinkin run couple sets .thanks for the imfo fellas.

FWIW I wouldn't do just the top hinges.

I haven't seen a door hinge set yet where if one pin is worn then both of them aren't shot... just sayin' as you might be lucky

I am running 255x85 on GQ TI with 2" lift had not realised they were such an unusual size, no complaints on how they perform but they came with the vehicle so no chance yo compare. Apart from availability, any performance advantage with 285's ?

id love to see a picture if there on ti rims.does the tyre look to skinny for the rim or does it look right .

I run 255/85R16 BFG KM2's on my GQ, on 16x7 -11mm steel wheels. With no flares the tyres protrude approx 30-40mm. No rubbing at all. 2" lift.

Love the tyres, but am looking to change rim offset to get them back in the guards..

I have no worries about them being an 'odd' size.

Hope that helps!

warehouseno27 my bfg km2 255 85 16 has arrived and im tossing up what rims to put on ,I thought 16 x7 minus 11 would be close to 16x8 pos 0.my options are ti 16x8 pos 10...enkie 16x8 pos 0....or buy new 16 x7 steelies .. I would like some help deciding if anyone could..should I just see how they look on my enkie pos 0 16x8

Apologies for the late reply! Have you put them on any rims yet?

For reference, I have put one of my 255/85R16's on a Nissan split rim (16x5.5 +15mm offset) and they sit perfectly inline with the GQ guards (note, no flares). No rubbing when turning, fits perfectly on rear door. Have not tested it under suspension compression though. Overall tyre width has decreased because of the 5.5" rim width, which has helped it stay within the guard. Hope that helps someone in the future!

Update - 255/85R16 on splits fitted fine but we're difficult to balance and a little vague under steering, not as stiff as when on a 7" rim. Ran them on splits for a few weeks but swapped them back to the 16x7's.
