Hi lads,

As the title say i have 2 broken exhaust studs on at the very back against the firewall on cylinder 6 an it is around 4mm inside the head! I have not attempted to get that one out yet.

The other is cylinder 2 it snapped while i was undoing the nuts on the manifold, as it didnt snap clean it left a jaggered edge basically in the middle of the stud i couldnt drill straight smack bang in the middle the aircon lines didnt help that either, i have tried easy outs an left hand drill bits i can get it to move back an fourth but not enough to get a little bit out of the head so i can get vice grips onto it.

My question is should i weld a nut onto it? I have a a stick welder in the shed at home an can also get access to mig, i dont feel confident enough with my welding skills to be able to weld a nut on there cause i really i dont want to stuff it up even more then i have!

Anyone that has any ideas or been in this situation what did you do?

Hello, Newbiee. I had the same problem on my RB30. In the end, I put everything together enough to drive it to an exhaust specialist, who did the job and replaced the broken studs fairly cheaply.

I had the same problem with my TD42 when i fitted extractors 3 or 4 studs snapped. I also did as mudnut said and bolted it up and took it to the exhaust shop and had the broken ones replaced. Dont remember how much he charged but it wasnt to bad.

I pulled the head on the rb30 I put in my mk -

I then purchased a ezyout kit that came with a left hand drill bit. on 2 of the studs as I drilled the stud the bolt came undone - left hand drill. I used the ezyout on the other 2. The rear bolt will be the hard one to get to.

The risk with ezy outs is of the snap then you are in troubles as ezy outs are very hrd

I agree with the guys in taking to an exhaust shop.
Especially for the very last one near the firewall.
You can weld, with a piece of rod or a smaller bolt, just try not to heat the head too much when doing it.

Use a stick welder and basically weld the end of the stick to the end of the stud. This should heat stud enough to free it from head, and can use the welding rod to unscrew. It's how your exhaust man would do it.

yeah i agree with fourj, weld nut to the end of the stud is the best way to remove broken studs.
