A spare parts shop? Sorry to sound rude, but that would be the obvious answer?

Don't waste your time in supercheats, it will be too dear, they won't have it in stock, will charge you to order it and will probably get the wrong one. Go to a spare parts shop that knows what they're doing and order the parts you need.

Look for. Reputable brand like ACL or Permaseal. There will be cheap options available but some won't seal properly or will be cut wrong.

Now, keep in mind, do you REALLY need a full gasket kit? If the motor is completely disassembled, yes, you do. If you're just lifting the head you can use a VRS kit, which is a lot cheaper and won't be full of bits you don't need.

We're often asked for a full gasket kit for a 253 or 351 only to find out they're changing an inlet manifold, or changing head gaskets so the majority of the motor is still intact.

If you're planning on pulling everything apart, make sure you put new bearings in, plus a new water pump.

i will be changing the timing belt also. i just figured it would be cheaper to buy a full gasket kit rather than just a kit for the bits on the front and head stuff.

your not being rude gqpork. was just curious are their better places than repco and auto one. They always need to order stuff and charge to get it in also.

A vrs (valve regrind set) will have more parts than required but it will have everything you need to reseal the head while still fitted to the engine. A timing belt kit should have everything you need from the belt to any gaskets/ o-rings you will disturb in doing the job.

As GQPorkroll has said what gaskets need replacing? Do you just want intake and exhaust gaskets or everything that is on the head etc?

A VRS kit contains everything from head gasket up (valve regrind set) so you'll have head gasket (which will need to be removed first as from memory there is a few different thicknesses) inlet and exhaust gaskets, tappet cover gasket, plus valve stem seals and probably a thermostat gasket and maybe a flange gasket. Your timing kit, if you buy a full kit, will include a waterpump, plus all gaskets, seals and tensioners required to do the job properly.

I can only speak for our store, Peps Auto Spares, but we don't charge freight unless it's a one off order. A VRS would come from our daily supplier and wouldn't have any extra freight added. All the Peps group order from one main supplier and all have the same freight deal, so I imagine they would all be the same. I know Supercheats charge $15 (at our local branch anyway) to order in any part, and won't refund freight it if it is wrong. I haven't heard of Repco or Auto One charging extra to order parts, but just recently a lady was looking for a VRS for a Laser and Repco was $300 dearer than us and Auto One was almost double, for exactly the same part, from the same supplier, at the same buy price.

You're in Sydney, there should be a Peps close to you, jump on our website and see who's closest and give them a ring and tell them Cessnock store referred you.

Be wary about using an aftermarket head gasket. I had problems and had to remove and replace the crappy gasket. It was a reputable brand too. They just aren't made like a genuine one and i will never use anything other than a genuine head gasket again! (There are exceptions to that).

No not all are up to genuine standards but typically speaking ACL and Permaseal are. We sell roughly $5000 of gaskets a month and have little to no comebacks (I can think of a set of VT head gaskets that allegedly didn't fit, but went straight onto a VT race block we had in the shed)

Some motors, particularly diesels, have up to 6 different thickness head gaskets and require removing and measuring first before the correct one can be supplied, which is why some shops will ask for a sample so they can accurately measure it first.

There's a motor I'm thinking of that has head gaskets from 10 thou thick up to 60 thou thick. No dates, vin numbers etc identify it, apart from measuring it.

Just keep in mind a full non genuine VRS would be roughly $350 where as you may pay that just for a genuine head gasket.

Currently I have a 4V 351 GT motor that was rebuilt with non genuine gaskets, 500+ horsepower and 11-1 compression no problems, I also have a 302 Clevo rebuilt with non genuine gaskets that regularly revs above 7000rpm with no issues at all, my GQ TB42 was rebuilt with non genuine gaskets over 50,000k's ago and it's like a rolls royce. Keep in mind, unless you have the engine rebuilt at a dealer, and specifically request genuine parts only they will sometimes substitute genuine parts for aftermarket, as we have supplied dealers with aftermarket parts. We also supply 5 workshops with gaskets, so you're fairly safe.

Make sure your head machined, your block is decked, or al least has a straight edge along it to make sure it's true, and always replace head bolts when you remove an alloy head.

Was actually speaking to a workshop foreman with a Patrol service vehicle who said Nissan quoted him $850 for a head gasket on a TD4.2. Just the gasket, not fitted, not a VRS, and wouldn't supply him with torque settings for the gasket.

I would never deal with Nissan, rather go direct to japan myself..

this is sounding harder and harder. all i want is a good set of head gasket kit and timing belt kit that will not fail on me. i heard there are only 3 thicknesses for the rd28td. i was thinking of getting the larger size so i can put more boost in her. Might just have to bite the bullet and give it to a reputable mechanic on these things. i want to tackle it myself as i have done petrol engines before. not sure what to do now

From what i am aware of, thicker head gaskets do nothing to boost on diesels, head gasket to suit piston protrusion.

You might not have comebacks but im sure it happens haha. I didnt take mine back. Whats the point. They wont do anything. Bought a new permaseal vrs set. Threw the head gasket in the bin and put a genuine one in.

ok, So i want to tackle it on my own, what else can i do to improve the perfomance of the engine while i have the head off. i just want it to go better. i have boosted it up to around 11-12psi, beside slapping an exhaust, cooler blocking egr is there anything else i can do?

if you cant find it...... MAKE IT :) there is this wonderful stuff called gasket paper ( autobahn and supercrap auto sell it ) 10 mins with a pen and a sharp blade like a craft of hobby knife and you have what you want... best thing is you can buy better quality paper than even the gen nissan sets are made of for 1/2 the price.. the money you save you can spend on a gen head gasket if you need one... I carry about 10 sheets of gasket paper in my toolbox, and have lost count of how many cars etc that I have made a gaskets for over the years.

If its an oil seal eg side covers etc.. get the OIL paper.. if its water get the WATER paper.

the only issue is, all the young folk that work in these auto joints dont know what gasket paper even is... I buy mine from REPCO
