View Full Version : GU Drivers side seat belt doesnt retract properly.

Hi everyone, the seat belt not retracting properly has annoyed me for a while now. Every time I get out I have to manually feed the belt back in so it doesn't get caught in the door when closing.
I have done some reasearch on it but most of the advice is to clean the belt and tracks, runners. Done that but didn't fix anything.
Anyone got any other solutions?
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul. Common issue. Nissan sell a teflon pad kit that you wrap around the D ring. It works good. But after a few months its back to normal. I have them on mine. I did see however a chap tighten up the spool on the retractor. He removed the belt from the retractor, and wound the hub up a few turns then put the belt back on. Apparently he see no more issues. I think this was on the P4x4 forum??? I'll see if I can find it.
Found it...

Don't waste your time, money and effort. I've tried all the you beaut tricks - and none of them work after a short while. I bought new after market belts from here:
https://www.seatsafe.com.au/home
I have had them for years now - and they are perfect.
Good luck with opening the mechanism and winding up the spring. Buy a new packet of bandaids before you start and wear eye protection!

You wouldn't happen to have the part number they supplied you? Their site doesn't list GU Patrol seat belts.

I had the same problem with no part numbers years ago so I rang them. They initially said that they did not carry the ST Patrol belts because their data base said the ST Patrol has pre tensioners on the front belts and the item they stocked which would fit did not have pre tensioners. I pulled my retractors out and they did not have pre tensioners. Its easy to tell as they will have an electrical harness going to them if the have.
I called them back and ordered the non pre tensioner ones for the Patrol - and as I said - they have worked fine for years.
Just make sure you get the correct ones if you have a single cab. They are different to the wagon as they sit at a slightly different angle and if you install the wrong ones the belts will be forever locking up when you try to put them on (like they do when you park on a slope and try to put the belt on).
Give SeatSafe a call. I found them very helpful.

I have dug through some old tax files and I found the receipt.
This is for a GU II Wagon.
Part Number: 1600007 GRY
Description: Seat Belt 90/90 RH Light Grey
Price was $241.80 for the pair including delivery to Albury NSW.
The RH fit both driver and passenger side front. The 90/90 is the angle it is designed to work at. I asked for the light grey colour but I think they did have others.

Unless yours have pre tensioners I would think that the ones detailed above would fit.

Bill I just spoke with Seat safe. You are right. Very helpful. They even found your record of when you bought yours. Back in 2012. Unfortunately the price is not the same though. But thats expected...
For anyone reading this the part number I will be ordering is 114-7554, with a 165MM rigid buckle. Slightly short than the OEM one by about 20mm. Same as Bills but now a different part number. And different colour...
The other thing is the height adjuster will no longer be adjustable as it simply bolts directly into the pillar.
BillsGU. Do you have a pic of the seat belt at the pillar section?

Mine is not height adjustable. It simply bolts to the pillar. Really nothing to see on a pic.But how does it look? I'm a stickler for keeping things neat in the cab. I rang a local mob who fix seat belts. I told them the issue of the belt not retracting right and they just said the webbing is the issue and won't touch the retractor. Even after I told them that even new belts from nissan do this. They wouldn't listen. So I left it at that. I think I'll just not bother about this for a while now.

Sorry Mudski _ my mistake. Mine are height adjustable. The end of the belt just fits straight into the height adjuster. The only way you can tell it is not an OEM belt is that the buckle is slightly different to a Nissan one. As I said before, I have heard all the tales about webbing and cleaning, etc. None of them are the real problem and none of them work for long. The Nissan retracting mechanism is and always has been CRAP. The only way to fix it is with a replacement. As I am in Western Qld at the moment my ability to post photos is limited. I'll post one when I get home.

Righto. When I spoke with the girl at Seat Safe she said the height adjuster will no longer work. As it just bolts into the pillar. I'm ok will that, only if it looks real out of place I am not. When you get a change but a pic would be grouse. My Patrol is not a daily, for now so its no biggie. I'll bother you in a couple of weeks to give you a reminder if you like...

No worries Mudski. I've tried to take a pic and I hope you can see how it connects. I used the original bolts and the adjuster still works. Can't see why the new ones they supply would not do the same job.
Sorry for the quality of the pic - but it's dark outside, I am camped in the bush outside of Charleville Qld, I'm a bit pissed (it's been a long afternoon around the camp fire) and I am trying to watch the footy.

I don't know about a price for new belts, but I did successfully wind up the spring in my driver's side belt retractor mechanism a few weeks ago.
Works much better retracting when removed now.

My drivers side is really bed. There is major dents between the door and body where I've shut the door and the metal buckle got jammed in there after NOT retracting.

First step when playing with the retractor - BUY LOTS OF BANDAIDS !!!! My fingers still have the scars from when I tried to do that.
Seatsafe sell a great replacement. I bought mine in 2012 and they are still working great.

Ok, thanks for the prompting, I just did the passenger side belt. Only took about 10mins to complete.
Everyone can manage getting access to the tensioner, so I'll skip to the good bit.
This is in my GU III 2004.
You can see plastic covers on both sides with 'do not remove' on them. Pay attention to that. Leave them on there.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/330.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/331.jpg
And here is a detail of the mechanism with tilt lock (the copper part). You'll need to hold the tensioner vertically to release the belt.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/332.jpg
Pull out all the belt length until you see the plastic spool.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/333.jpg
You'll need to hook the belt end and pull it from the plastic spool. Loosen off a bit of tension from the back so it's not held in with any pressure.
I used a scribe with a 90° hooked end.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/334.jpg
Pull it out and push the little pin out of the loop.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/335.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/336.jpg
Before you remove the strap, take note of which way it feeds though. The slits are slightly different thicknesses, but you can see a small hole at the loop end and a big hole at the back where the belt feeds into the plastic spool.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/337.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/338.jpg
Pull the belt out and keep a tight grip on the spool from the front and back by pinching your fingers into the slots. It's not hard to keep hold of. Just like a fully extended tape measure.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/339.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/340.jpg
Use two hands to wind the spool against the tension. Just turning it with your thumbs while also keeping fingers on it from the back too. For my driver's side I think I wound about 6 - 8 full rotations, for the passenger side I only did 4.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/341.jpg
Line up the spool and feed the belt loop back through the side of the spool you took notice of earlier ;)
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/342.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/343.jpg
Push it through and reinstall the pin.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/344.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/345.jpg
Pull the belt loop back into place and let it retract slowly.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/346.jpg
Now you can bolt the tensioner back into place with the guide screw and test how it functions. If it's still not great, repeat the process and wind a few more rotations into the spring.
I did this whole process with the belt in place obviously.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/05/347.jpg

Thanks Cremulator great info mate!Yeh I was really worried about trying this the first time as I didn't want to mess up the retractor, but it's actually really easy once you pull the tensioner out. As long as you don't let go of the spool when the belt is removed and let it unwind, you'll be fine.

Mate sorry for the post dig up, just recently spoke to the bird at seat safe and she's said the same it won't work with mine due to my model having airbags, does yours have airbags?
BillsGU
27th July 2021, 10:56 PM
Yep - she has got it wrong again. Its not the airbags that determine if the belts are suitable - it's the pre tensioners that some vehicles have - and seatsafe don't sell. I think whatever paperwork they are using tells them that all Patrols have pre tensioners. Just tell her you want the same belts that the guy called Bill bought for his Patrol some years back. Others have said that and she remembered and they recieved the correct belts. Also, ensure you tell her if you have a ute or a wagon because they use slightly different belts. I have had mine for years now and they are still perfect. Not like the rubbish belts Nissan supply. And yes - my Patrol has driver and passenger airbags. Scottwoolsey

I did my driver’s side seatbelt today, took the pin out and wound it tighter, washed and dried it and still doesn’t work as it should. The only thing that really helped was silicone spray on the belt.
With the retractor tightened the belt is simply too tight against my chest. I couldn’t drive it like this so I’ll loosen it off tomorrow and then follow Bill’s advice next week and buy new belts from that mob.

Winding up the retractor doesn’t work because it still gets slowed going through the top slot on the pillar. If you play with the webbing between that slot and the retractor it works really well. The coating on that top slot seems to create a lot of friction with the webbing and that’s why the silicone spray helps.
We’re in lockdown here for a few days but when that ends I’ll take a belt out and drive down to Seat Safe to show them what I need.
As Bill said, it’s clear they need to be replaced.

If you read through the posts here a number over the years discussed fixes for the belts. I tried them all and none of them worked successfully. If you do try to wind the mechanism the first items you need to buy are a couple of packets of bandaids - because you are going to do damage to your fingers!

Winding the retractor reel is actually quite easy once you get the pin out and pull the webbing away from it.
I just followed the ‘how to’ that Cremulator posted earlier on and there’s absolutely no risk to fingers.. and my fingers are 76 years old :)

I’ve just ordered new front seat belts from Seat Safe. Part No 114-7554. They can supply the buckle receiver that bolts to seat with a kink in it like the original.
I asked why they don’t supply for wagon with airbags and it’s not because they think Patrols have pre tensioners but because they can’t supply the factory webbing that’s designed to let go a little when the crash force is such that the airbag deploys. I assume it will break the stitching or something so you get a slight delay before going into the airbag cushion.
I assured the lady that I wasn’t planning on letting the airbag deploy anytime soon..
Edit: $415 the pair with express post

Hmm - the story has changed - or the staff have. They fit and they work. Much safer than a Nissan belt that flops around and does not sit anywhere near where it should. Plus always getting caught in the door? No thanks.

Thought this might interest anyone who’s thinking about replacing the GU seatbelts. I changed the passenger side today and took a few pics.
I ordered the receiver with the bent leg but it’s bent the wrong way so order the straight one. I just put it in the vice and more or less flattened the first kink so it sits nicely away from the centre console.

84150
They supply a bracket to bolt to the retractor and you just need to bend it to shape.
84151
84152
Once you get it bolted in place you need to fasten it so you can remove the bolt to put the plastic pillar cover over it. I just put a couple of short self tapping roof screws.
84153
You’ll need to cut this loop off the old belt. It holds the webbing closer to the pillar. Cut it at the back and the belt can’t touch it.
84154
84155
84156
It fits nicely under the factory height adjuster but you need to use a shorter bolt.
