View Full Version : Which lightforce spotties to get

Ok guys, which lightforce spotties have you got. I am looking at getting a set and want to know the differences (apart from sizes) between the said spotties. I would love hid but at this point in time it isn't going to happen (the missus...but I still luv her as she is a great cook)
What are the beam lengths and the spread like and has anyone got any pics.

I can only comment on the 170 Strikers as that's what I had on my BT50. My opinion was they were worth the coin and loved them, variable between spot / spread and not fixed pattern so you can turn the lense to what suits you best. I only had 1 set on the rig and they were more than enough for what i was doing (was happy with 300-500m ahaead depending on set up). When coin permits I will be getting some to replace my Narva 170's (will go on the wife's car) with 170 Strikers again.

Thanks oncedisturbed, thats the sort of info I am after. Have you had any issue with the mounting post?

no problems at all and found them a lot easier to fit due to their angle posts and having a bit more room to move then other lights.

It's really what will fit your car or 4wd the best. There all good lights but the Genesis or XGT aren't adjustable. So if you where to buy Genesis or XGT I'd recommend you buy spots and if you want to change one or the other to spread you can always fit combo lense covers. If you but spread reflectors (genesis) the only way you can convert them to spot is replace the reflectors which means sending them back to Lightforce which I've just done. They are replacing the reflectors on my Genesis to spot for nothing though which is pretty good service.
Cheers Mick.

There is a cheaper option, called the RooLite which is basically a light force copy at lesser price. I had the 200's from memory on my old hilux and they were great. I changed the globes over to a Narva or possibly Philips globe, and never had any dramas. A lot of Lightforce is paying for the name, they're pretty basic, only plastic and aside from being adjustable, nothing special. Don't be tempted to go for the cheap HID lights, I used some on my truck and they were rubbish. Maybe 1km of beam but no spread at all. They were a dead set pencil beam and because of their mounting system they were either too high and shooting at UFO's or too low, just firing straight into the ground.

Thanks Mick and GQPorkroll. I will have a look at the Roolites and see what they are about. Would like Hid but the missus has put a knife through my budget, so I have to find compromises in what I want. Ah the joys of marriage!!

Hey mate i got a pair of 170's and a pair of 240 blitz on my GQ and a pair of 50w HID XGT's on my GU. The 170's are good they thorw out ample amount of light for a halogen light and one for their size. The 240's are awesome for halogen heaps of light and have been trouble free absolutely reliable I have these setup with the 240 in a spot and the 170's with spread covers on them gives me good coverage of light. The XGT's are absolutely gold heaps of light nearly to much when approaching reflective signs they were easy to mount and have been great so far. I think lightforce are the go i have seen a few of those roo lights crack and allow water ingress and as mick said light force are more than happy to help out.

nissannewby/ Superoo, thanks guys. I really like the lightforce ones and would of put them on the patrol but when we bought it, it had the ipf's as part of the deal from nissan so didn't really want to go and change them, but the new patrol doesn't have spotties as yet. The ipf's were great but I would like a bit more distance and spread from the next set so I am on the hunt.

if you can fit a 240mm light in your bar, go the xgt. not specifically for the light output ( even though it is excellent and definitely holds more than its own against all competitors) do it for the housing construction. lightforce have created a spotlight housing that undeniably takes the cake. lightforce claim they can take a bullet, but my set of hid's (same housing) has fallen off a truck, literally, been smacked into by another truck, taken direct hits from large roos, been knocked back so hard it put a dent in my bonnet, so many thousands of kilometers of corrugated roads, never miss a beat ....... ever!
for all spotlight mounting though, i do recommend fitting some rubber between the spotlight mount and the steel mounting bracket on your rig. 10-12mm if you can get it but even 5mm helps take some of the "shake" out of the light on corrugated roads, helps limit twisting on the mounts as rubber is grippy, it helps absorb corrugated abuse and impacts too.

and since you seem so keen on details, i have a set of old halogen type rally's i think, i get about 350mtrs of decent light close up, my mate has xgt's up north, comparatively i could see at least another 5 or 6 road markers ( i think they are about 50 mtrs apart) but my hids blow them all away. my only complaint about my hids, is the road sign flash back

choppie, thanks mate, I will have a look at the Britax lights and see what they are about.
stets, thanks to you too. How does the light output of the xgt's compare to the 240 blitz.
On a side note, I was over your way a couple of years ago with a good mate of mine and we were looking forward to going fishing on one of the charters but it is a bloody windy joint, it was blowing about 30 knots when we were there. Apart from the wind it was a beautiful part of the country and you guys have a great maritime museum as well, we spent a couple of hours in there.

yeah i love geraldton, specifically moved back here from darwin, should have never left!!
i have never seen a side by side comparison between the blitz and xgt. the main differences are the housing though i reckon. the blitz has a wind out type housing which alters the spread of the light. it sits on an arm and just looks a little weak in my opinion.
as for the xgt's, they are a fixed refelctor, meaning you have to purchase filters seperately to get your spot or spread configuration. they have so many filters for so many different purposes it would be hard not to find one you were happy with.
my biggest satisfaction with the xgt housing is knowing that no matter what i throw at them, they keep going. deep water, mud, high pressure cleaning, heat, cold, vibrations, animal strikes, not to forget a very serious vehicle collision that destroyed the vehicle that they were originally on

stets,
thanks mate. I will have more of a look at the xgt's. I was also looking at the genesis, have you had much to do with these, these have the same mounting as the xgt's don't they?
Greg
stets
25th April 2012, 04:26 PM
no the genesis is 210mm and the xgt is 240mm. i cant say much about the genesis housing as i can honestly say that i have never even seen them fitted yet.
going by the pics they look to be made of the same materials, but not sure
here is a good page that really goes over all the ins and outs of each light

the genesis just seems like a slightly smaller light to cater for the med sized 4wds, like navaras and such that you cant fit an xgt into the front bar

All just my opinion.
I had a set of XGT's on my last patrol with the light blue lens covers, with spot and spread. Absolutely loved them. (Cost about $550 for a pair.)
Bought a BT50 with a set of IPF 900 extreme's, 1 spot, 1 spread, with light blue covers. (about $450 the pair, I think, only because the XGT's didn't fit.)
I think the XGT's smash the IPF's. left them for dead in real world light output. I don't know the figures, but they definitely appear a lot better.
I have also used a handheld lightforce 180 (i think), and found the 240 XGT's also left it for dead, there was 2 of them but.
I am wanting to upgrade my XGT's to HID for my new patrol in a couple of weeks, we'll see what SWMBO says, I guess.
I guess it all comes down to what you need versus how much you want to spend.
Good luck with your decision.

Rip'n'Shred, thanks for the info.
Over the last few days I have looked on evilbay at all sorts of lights from the cheaper chinese ones right up to hella (and their exorbinant prices!!) and eveything in between. I still keep coming back to the lightforce for some reason. But last night I looked at some (I dare say they are chinese!) from a couple of companies in melbourne and for the same price as a set of xgt's I can get 1 set of 220mm light in 35w hid (6000K) and another set of 100mm 35w hid (6000K). Unfortunately I am not sure of the quality of these lights, but as I am not doing any outback trips for the next couple of years I have to work out whether it is worth taking the risk on these or sticking with the more expensive but tried and tested.
aarrrgggghhhhh...bloody decisions
Here is a link to the light I am talking about.

I have XGTs and they are great. I got them for a good price and am happy with them.
If I was paying retail I'd have to consider buying the lightforce Blitz 240s and fitting a 55w HID kit into them!!! Hell Yeah! Now we are talking! The XGTS are more difficult to convert to HID so I would go with the Blitz.

Or you could grab a set of ours!!! $850 - 2 year warranty (local, and no, they are not Chinese lights). Have to put up the video we did for comparison against an XGT (which is a 9" vs our 7") - lets just say, the GSC's were the "small dog" but packed the bigger bite!! lol
In Sydney till tomorrow arvo, but will load video when I get back.

Scotty, are they HID's or Halogen.
Do you have a PDF on them yet, with full details of the light.
